Reading Resources to Kick Off Your Summer Break

How Can Teachers Increase Access and Self-Selection for Summer Reading?

The past 35+ years of meta-analysis of reading comprehension and summer learning suggests that increasing access to books and encouraging reading may have a substantial impact on achievement (Heyns, as cited in Allington et al., 2010). Some digital resources include, but are not limited to, TumbleBooks, We Give Books, Oxford Owl, International Children’s Digital Library, Story Place, Listen & Read, Children’s Storybooks Online, Newsela, Reading Is Fundamental, Starfall, Storyline Online, Storybird, Star Walk Kids Media (free only in July), K12 Handhelds Ebooks, Gutenberg, Planet eBook, and Books That Grow. Some additional digital materials for students with disabilities include: Bookshare (for students with print disabilities), AIM-VA (for students with IEP that qualifies them for accessible text), and Learning Ally (for students who are visually impaired, blind, or dyslexic).
